The first round of the NFL Draft wasn’t too kind to the Big 12. With just two players taken, the conference ranks at the bottom of the power five conferences. It continues a disturbing downward trend where the Big 12 is struggling to produce first-round talent. Over the last five seasons the conference has had just 14 names called on the draft’s opening night.

Jameis Winston went first to the Buccaneers, and despite all kinds of rumors of the Browns or the Eagles making a move to pick up Marcus Mariota, the Tennessee Titans took the Oregon QB with the second pick. The ACC and the Pac-12 earned top honors with nine players drafted a piece, and the Washington Huskies stole the evening with three players chosen.

Let’s take a look at the two Big 12 players that heard their names called.

7th – KEVIN WHITE (WVU)  Chicago Bears

The West Virginia receiving star is headed to the Windy City with the seventh overall pick. White’s stock rose throughout the draft process and he’ll play alongside of Alshon Jeffery as the Bears are looking to replace Brandon Marshall.

32nd – MALCOM BROWN (UT) New England Patriots

With the final pick of the first round, the New England Patriots found their replacement for Vince Wilfork by taking Texas’ Malcom Brown off the board. Brown is considered the third best defensive tackle in the draft this year, and has to like the idea of playing for a Super Bowl contender right out of college.

The second round begins on Friday and with Oklahoma’s Dorial Green-Beckham, Jordan Phillips, Daryl Williams, TCU’s Paul Dawson, K-State’s Tyler Lockett, and Baylor’s Bryce Petty still on the board, the Big 12 could have a big rebound. Here’s a complete breakdown of the first round picks.
