Athletes doing dumb things is a staple of the off-season, but shooting yourself has to be one of the dumbest. Sheldon Croney, an Iowa State recruit, did just that. He accidentally shot himself in his left hand on Tuesday, and it all allegedly happened at the home of his high school basketball coach.
According to Police, Croney and a friend were at another friend’s house when they found a gun belonging to the friend’s father, and that’s when Croney accidently discharged it into his own hand. While the specific address was not given, KERO Bakersfield noted that the known residence of the basketball coach, Michael Martin, is on the same street.
Perhaps after realizing that shooting yourself in your coach’s home was probably a bad thing, Croney was taken to the other friends home where police and medical aid were notified and responded.
It’s important to note that Martin and his wife were not home at the time, and were vacationing in Jamaica. However, the coach resigned from his position with the school on Thursday.
There’s no official word on the extent of the injury, but KERO reported that the injury was to Croney’s palm, and he will be in a cast for at least six weeks.
No charges are expected to be filed, and Iowa State has reportedly said they will still honor the scholarship given to Croney. The 3-star recruit out of Bakersfield, CA. committed to play running back for the Cyclones, and is part of the 2015 class. Here’s hoping the rest of his playing career goes a little smoother.
