Texas Tech has lost a little bit of depth in the secondary. It was reported on Tuesday that corner La’Darius Newbold is transferring from the Red Raiders, and is headed to Illinois State.

“We are always trying to find depth in our secondary and were especially looking for some help at the safety position,” Illinois State head coach Brock Spack said in a statement. “We like big players who can run at that position, and La’Darius fits that mold. He is a player who has the physicality we like as well and gives us some time to work with him and get him in the system.”

The loss of Newbold won’t be heavily felt by the Red Raiders. After using his redshirt his freshman year in 2012, he played in three games in 2013. However, last season he played in just one game, and had zero starts.

Newbold will join the Redbirds with two years of eligibility remaining, and will be able to play right away since the move is a step down in division.
