Don’t call this an upset. We’ve been warning you for weeks, Kansas could be historically bad this season. David Beaty inherited a team left bare, and it seems like every few weeks we’re talking about key players being marked off the roster for one reason or another.

Things got off to just about the worst start imaginable. The Jacks moved the ball at will, and jumped out to a 31-7 lead over the Jayhawks. Just as it was getting out of hand though, KU flipped a switch and decided they weren’t going to lay down. The Jayhawks battled all the way back within three.

Down three, Kansas got the ball back with just seconds on the clock. Out of timeouts though, the game ended on a botched spike to try to stop the clock.

“I felt like I got too lax,” Kansas QB Montell Cozart said after the game“We work on clock situations all the time. When the ball hit me, I fumbled it.”

It was a anticlimactic end to an otherwise valiant effort.

“You never think about stuff like that until it happens to you,” Cozart said. “It feels like an uppercut to the gut.”

Midway through the second quarter coach Beaty dialed up the reverse, and Kansas scored their second touchdown of the game! All of a sudden Kansas had some fight. SDSU struggle to sustain drives, and the Jayhawks scored 21 answered points to pull within three.

They couldn’t quite capture the win, but they earned a lot of respect. It’s going to be a long season, but if David Beaty can keep them fighting, it won’t take KU long to become competitive once again.

Positives For Kansas

Their Mettle – It would have been easy to fold it in, but the Jayhawks didn’t do that. It’s not going to be a quick turnaround, but watch out Big 12, David Beaty has plans for KU.

The Offense – Montell Cozart threw an early pick, but the offense was eventually able to find a rhythm. They were able to use the run early to open up the pass later for a balanced attack.

Negatives For Kansas

Defense – There’s work to do. Matthew Boateng’s absence hurt. They failed to convert a turnover, and were abused early through the air. Not a great sign with teams like Baylor, TCU, and Texas Tech on the schedule.

Player Of The Game

Montell Cozart – Cozart was pushed into duty after Michael Cummings tore his ACL in the spring, and despite an early pick and the botched spike, Cozart played well. He completed 25 of 38 passes for 291 yards, and threw a touchdown.

What The Loss Means

South Dakota State was the most winnable game on the roster. The loss means the Jayhawks are most likely staring 0-12 in the face.

Emptying The Notebook

Four Kansas players scored a touchdown today, which means the Jayhawks now have four players on the roster with touchdowns.

Coach Beaty is a gambler. He went for is five times on fourth down, and converted four of them!

This kick return was great!
