Former FBS head coach Mark Mangino has been working his way back up the ranks at Iowa State where he’s been Paul Rhoads offensive coordinator. On Monday that ended. Iowa The Cyclones dismissed Mangino from the sidelines as their head play caller. By Thursday Rhoads had already found a replacement. The Cyclones added another former FBS head coach to re balance the staffing numbers on the sideline. This go around it is former Washington State Head Coach Paul Wulff. Oh, and somewhere in between wide receivers coach Todd Sturdy was promoted to offensive coordinator.
If you still are not satisfied with enough change on the offensive side of the ball, keep in mind Joel Lanning will be making his first career start at quarterback this Saturday for Homecoming in Ames against the Texas Longhorns. At this rate should we be surprised if the Cyclones unveil some sort of alternate uniform to cap off “new look” week? After all, this is not your 8-week old infant son or daughter’s Iowa State offense.
How exactly does a college football staff add an employee mid-season? Coach Wulff joins the staff as an unpaid volunteer assistant. At this time, it is unclear the exact capacity in which Coach Wulff will operate on the staff, but one can assume it will be in some sort of close consulting role during game days with new OC Sturdy. In a true “student has become the teacher” situation, Sturdy served as the OC for Wulff both at Eastern Washington and Washington State. While the two may work together well from a communication standpoint, the production point of view tells a different story. During their time in Pullman, the two compiled a 9-40 record in four seasons from 2008-2011 for the Cougars. Total offenses by year at Wazzu are as follows: 119th (2008, 2009), 92nd (2010) and 33rd (2011). It is worth noting in their tenure at the FCS level there were also 40 losses as well, but 53 victories and three playoff appearances.
Wulff takes the tag of volunteer assistant for the second time in his career, though this time probably a little easier to survive following a string of years with six figure salaries. Wulff started at Eastern Washington in 1993 with the same designation and turned it into a head coaching gig in seven years. Other rags to riches examples of volunteer assistants are former Golden Gopher head skipper Tim Brewster and current 49ers head coach Jim Tomsula. Brewster got his start under Mack Brown at UNC, while Tomsula a Division II school in North Carolina as well. Wulff has nothing to lose with the five remaining games on Iowa State’s schedule. Head Coach Paul Rhoads on the other hand? Only time will tell.
