On the field, Baylor’s football program has become a Big 12 title contender year in and year out. Off the field, sexual assault charges and allegations against former players continue to take attention away from their prolific rise.

The Waco Tribune originally reported that a “prominent” Baylor football player was being investigated by police for an alleged sexual assault against a Baylor student. It has since been learned that the prominent player is defensive star and NFL draft-hopeful Shawn Oakman.

Per the police’s search warrant affidavit, Oakman is being accused of sexually assaulting the alleged victim at his residence after meeting her at a nightclub earlier that night. Oakman maintains that the sex was consensual. At this time no arrests have been made.

Unfortunately, this is just the latest incident in a string of alleged sexual assaults by former Baylor players. Former BU player Sam Ukwuachu was convicted of sexual assault back in August against a then Baylor soccer player.  The victim reached a settlement with Baylor, and Ukwuachu was sentenced to 180 days in jail with 10-years’ probation. More Recently, It was learned that a lawsuit has been filed against Baylor just this month for their handling of a sexual assault involving former player Tevin Elliot.  Elliot was convicted of two counts of sexual assault and sentenced to a maximum of 20 years in prison, but it’s the school’s alleged “deliberate indifference” that’s come under fire.

In the aftermath of Ukwuachu’s conviction it was learned that he was involved in a violent incident while at Boise State which led to nation-wide scrutiny as to why Ukwuachu ever stepped foot on Baylor’s campus. Something we may hear more of considering Shawn Oakman also found a new home in Waco after a violent incident left him on the outs with his former school.

Oakman was dismissed from Penn State following an incident where he manhandled a female cashier over his meal card, and attempted to steal a sandwich.

“I went to the Mix [a convenient store inside one of the Commons] on St. Patrick’s Day during the afternoon. I walked in and put the hoagie in my jacket, picked up a fruit juice, went over to the cashier and attempted to pay for the juice. There were no points on my card.” Oakman said at the time. “A lady came from the back and asked me if I was going to pay for the sandwich and I asked her ‘what sandwich?’

“When the cashier swiped my card, she told me I had no points left and put my ID card down on the counter. I wanted it back, because our meal points are on it. When I attempted to get the card back, I grabbed the cashier’s wrist and took my card from her hand. That’s when she started hollering and making a scene. I got my ID card, I took the sandwich out of my jacket and the fruit juice and put it on the counter and went back to the dorms. I really didn’t think anything was going to come of it.”

It’s too early in the process to know what will come of this latest incident, but it’s clear that Baylor has some tough questions to answer.
