When West Virginia University kicks off the football season on Saturday against the Missouri Tigers, they will do so wearing a special white helmet featuring a “WVU 125” logo.

West Virginia wanted something special to celebrate their 125-year history of Mountaineer football, and work on the “WVU 125” logo began shortly after the Cactus Bowl win over Arizona State.
The idea was to pick a uniform combination from the past, incorporate the 125 logo and tie-in with the Gold Rush promotion on opening day. The white-gold-white combo made the most sense given its usage in the Jim Carlen era.
In an era when uniform combinations are more and more garish, WVU managed to combine design elements from past logos while maintaining the strength of the flying WV brand. It is a classic logo that invokes a sense of nostalgia while being thoroughly modern.
