4-Star Quarterback Casey Thompson Commits To Texas

Tom Herman locked up a perfect fit to run his offense earlier today as 4-star quarterback Casey Thompson ended his recruitment with a commitment to Texas. Texas had been the rumored landing spot for the Oklahoma legacy for months, and the allure of Tom Herman’s fast-paced style was enough for the Southmoore signal caller to pull the trigger today.

As I mentioned, Casey is an Oklahoma legacy as his father, Charles, and brother, Kendal (transferred to Utah and switched to wide receiver), both played quarterback for the Sooners. Casey picked Texas over Oklahoma, North Carolina, Miami, Tennessee, and Ohio State. Although, there has been speculation that the Oklahoma and Ohio State offers weren’t committable.

Even if those offers weren’t committable, the one from Texas was and that’s all that matters here. Casey is the third 2018 prospect to accept their offer from Tom Herman, as he joins Justin Watkins and Byron Hobbs. His commitment moves Texas to 33rd in the country, and 5th in the Big 12.

Thompson brings a ton to Texas on the field. Like I said, he’s essentially a perfect match for Tom Herman’s offense. The 6-foot-1, 184 pound quarterback is an excellent runner, and has lots of experience running the read option that Herman loves so much. He’s extremely smooth when he runs, but don’t confuse him for a quarterback who can only run. Thompson has a great arm, and throws one of the best deep balls I’ve ever seen from a high school quarterback. He’s strong, and has great accuracy downfield. His footwork needs to improve, but he has the arm to make any throw on the field. If you’re the kind of person who likes comparisons, I would compare Thompson to former Mack Brown whiff and current Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett.
