Iowa RB Derrick Mitchell Jr Announces Transfer To Texas Tech

A strange little recruiting pipeline of sorts is opening up between Iowa City and Lubbock. The Red Raiders already have two former Iowa Hawkeyes on the roster in QB Nic Shimonek and WR Derrick Willies, and on Saturday morning, Iowa RB Derrick Mitchell Jr. announced his transfer to Texas Tech.

As I Graduate today and get my degree from the University of Iowa I will be playing my last year of football at Texas Tech University.

Mitchell, who graduated on Saturday, will be able to play right away. He came to Iowa as a 3-star receiver in their 2013 class and redshirted his freshman year. Mitchell was moved from receiver to running back and he saw some limited playing time in 2014 and 2015 when games started to get out of hand.

However, his role was diminished further in 2016 due to injury, and he had just two carries last season for 12 yards, though one was for a touchdown.

Buried on the depth chart again this season, as RB Akrum Wadley decided to forgo the NFL and return for his senior year, Mitchell announced his decision to transfer from Iowa back in January in search of more playing time.
