USA Today released the first Amway Coaches Poll of the season, and the Big 12 is well represented as half the conference’s schools are named in the preseason rankings.
Oklahoma leads the Big 12 and cracks the top 10 at number eight. Only Alabama, Ohio State, Florida State, Southern California, Clemson, Penn State and Washington are ahead of them, in that order. The Big 12’s other heavy favorite to win the conference, Oklahoma State, is not listed too far behind at 11th in the poll.
The Big 12 In The Preseason Coaches Poll
11. Oklahoma State
19. Kansas State
20. West Virginia
Receiving Votes: TCU
It’s great that the Big 12 is healthily represented, but it is surprising to see K-State ranked so low. Maybe nobody remembers them dragging the Aggies up and down the field in December. The Wildcats are flying under the radar, but I’m sure that’s exactly how coach Snyder prefers it.
And then there’s Texas. If you can’t win, at least you can make the polls by changing coaches. Tom Herman has the Longhorns going in the right direction. At least we think, because until we see it on the field, nothing is certain. No matter what, it’s not likely to be an over night transformation. Herman has been pretty upfront with where the team is lacking depth this offseason, and it’s at key areas of his offense. It might be a little bit early to be catapulting them into the Top 25. For the Big 12’s sake though, let’s hope the coaches are on to something.
