The LGG Preseason Big 12 Poll

On Thursday, we will exactly two weeks away from some pads on pads, honest to goodness football when Oklahoma State and Tulsa square off on August 31. That means it’s time to release the LGG Preseason Big 12 Conference Poll.

LGG Preseason Big 12 Poll

1. Oklahoma – 16 (6)
2. Oklahoma State – 17 (5)
3. Kansas State – 37
4. West Virginia – 43
5. Texas – 59
6. TCU – 61
7. Iowa State – 83
8. Baylor – 86
9. Texas Tech – 97
10. Kansas – 106

The voting shows that most of us view the conference in a few distinct tiers. Several of the rankings were separated by just a few points, starting with number one and two. The Sooners barely edged out the Pokes for first place as just one vote was the difference, but it’s clear that those two schools are the favorites.

In the next tier Kansas State and West Virginia are the clear dark horse candidates to be waiting if OU or OSU slip up. The Wildcats return a lot of strength from 2016 and have a favorable schedule, while the Mountaineers will debut highly anticipated Florida transfer quarterback Will Grier.

And then there is Texas and TCU, other wise known as the tier of unknown. The Horned Frogs have talent, but issues that plagued them in 2016 weren’t answered in the Frog’s spring game, and it has yet to be seen if Kenny Hill can live up to potential and play at a consistently high level. Or, for that matter, any level consistently.  As for the Horns, unknown may be an understatement. New coach Tom Herman has brought a lot of excitement to Austin, but there are some real depth concerns with this squad. We won’t know what expectations are for this team until after their tough non-con slate.

Iowa State leads the bottom four teams as most of us are expecting a much improved season for the Cyclones, while simultaneously, we expect Baylor and Texas Tech to take a step back. The Jayhawks bring up the rear, but it was not a sweep. Which speaks to that most of us feel that David Beaty has this team on the right track.
