Finally, the Big 12 got a weekend of football is desperately needed with big wins by the Horned Frogs and Sooners. And now, all of a sudden, the college football world is taking a second look at the conference. That’s thanks in large part by some clutch performance across the conference. I’m sure it wasn’t an easy task, but the Big 12 Conference has named the week two players of the week.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
QB BAKER MAYFIELD [OU]
Is there any question who this week’s offensive player of the week is? Baker Mayfield willed his team to a huge road victory at Ohio State. Mayfield’s leadership was on full display as he played through a slight hamstring pull and multiple cramps. He did not let these setbacks slow him down however. He was simply dominant. Mayfield went 27 of 35 for 386 yards and three touchdowns. To cap off the victory, Mayfield ran a victory lap around the horseshoe flying the OU flag. He then provided one of the most iconic moments of the college football season thus far, planting the OU flag on the Ohio State logo at midfield. Mayfield had his Heisman moment Saturday night and it appears as if it is his Heisman to lose at this point.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
DB KENDALL ADAMS [KSU]
The Wildcat safety made a huge defensive impact Saturday against Charlotte. He scored two defensive touchdowns including a 30-yard pick six and a 46-yard scoop and score. Adams was the first Big 12 player to record a pick six and scoop and score in the same game since 2001. In addition, Adams also added five tackles to top off an excellent performance. Adams has emerged as a leader of the Wildcat defense and is currently their leading tackler. Kansas State is facing their first real test this Saturday as they travel to SEC country to take on Vanderbilt.
SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
K MATT AMMENDOLA [OSU]
The sophomore kicker had a great showing Friday night against South Alabama. He nailed a career long 53-yard field goal and added a 48-yarder and a 31-yarder. Overall he went three for four from the field and was five for five on extra points. If he can dial in the shorter kicks, Ammendola could emerge as one of the Big 12’s premier kickers. Ammendola returns to his home state this weekend as the cowboys look to improve their resume and try to get a big win at Pitt this weekend.
NEWCOMER OF THE WEEK
QB WILL GRIER [WVU]
Will Grier earned his second straight newcomer of the week honors after a dominating performance against East Carolina. Grier went 19 of 25 for 352 yards for 5 touchdowns and could’ve done a lot more damage if West Virginia kept their foot on the gas pedal. It appears that Grier has knocked off all the rust from a nearly two-year hiatus from game action. Grier is a natural gun slinger and fits in perfectly in the Big 12. Grier is starting to be recognized as a Heisman dark horse as many expected. It will be a true pleasure seeing Grier, Rudolph, and Mayfield all square off down the road in conference play. West Virginia hosts Delaware State this weekend in what should be another blowout.
