In this week’s Big 12 picks, I said that I expect Iowa State to win comfortably as quarterback Jacob Park will be the difference maker. Turns out, that was pretty spot on. Park went 24/33 for 317 yards and two scores,
The first was all Iowa State as the Cyclones took an early 14-point lead, but the Zips made things interesting in the second. A touchdown with just 38 seconds left in the half pulled Akron within six. That was as close as Akron would get as Park launched a perfectly thrown 43-yard touchdown to Marchie Murdock in the third quarter to blow the game open. Iowa State pulled away after that to win 41-14.
“Jacob is just so wild out there, but that’s his way of playing,” receiver Allen Lazard said after the game. “Even when he’s running around and is off-balance, he just throws the ball around and is having fun.”
Park wasn’t the only Cyclone with a good day. Quarterback turned linebacker Joel Lanning recorded his first sack and his first interception. Running back David Montgomery also put up a decent performance with 127 yards and a score on 22 carries.
If Iowa State wants to go to a bowl game this year, these are the games they have to win. They let Akron back in it in the second quarter, but showed some fortitude by responding in the third quarter. Overall, it was a pretty solid performance. The Cyclones now have a bye week as they prepare to welcome Texas to Jack Trice Stadium on Thursday, September 28.
