In a survive and advance Saturday, in which many teams in the top 10 struggled, only Oklahoma State failed to persevere. The seventh-ranked Cowboys fell to the 15th-ranked TCU Horned Frogs at home in the highest matchup of ranked teams this weekend. The loss sent the Cowboys to number 14 in the week five USA Today Amway Coaches poll released on Sunday. Meanwhile, TCU finds itself just outside the top 10 sitting at number 11. Georgia took the Cowboys’ place in the top 10 after a dominant victory over Mississippi State at home.

The West Virginia Mountaineers finally re-enter the rankings at number 23 this week after an up-and-down performance at Kansas. This sets the stage for a pivotal Big 12 game at TCU in a couple of weeks as both teams are idle in week five.

Texas Tech is receiving votes in the Coaches Poll for the first time this season after a surprising 3-0 start for the Red Raiders, which includes victories over Arizona State and Houston. It is safe to say that the college football world undersold Tech entering this season, and head coach Kliff Kingsbury’s attention to the defense this off-season has had an obvious impact. Next up, the Red Raiders host Oklahoma State in a primetime game in Lubbock. This contest has suddenly become very interesting and particularly dangerous for the Cowboys who need to move on quickly from the TCU loss.

In a couple other odd notes, Mississippi State is now behind LSU in the polls despite a 37-7 beat down of the Tigers the previous week, and Florida State is the only winless team in the rankings. It has been a terrible start to the season for the talented Seminoles for a variety of reasons, and they will need to improve along the offensive line if they want to keep their season from slipping off the rails. They travel to 4-0 Wake Forest this week.
