LGG Big 12 Week 5 Poll

A couple of gutsy performances by some underdogs in week four has made an impact on the week five LandGrant Gauntlet Poll. There’s a new number two, a new (but familiar) basement dweller, and plenty of shuffling in the middle. Here’s the week 5 LGG poll.

1. OKLAHOMA [1-0, 4-0]

POINTS: 11 [9]
PREVIOUS RANKING: 1
LAST WEEK: Beat Baylor, 49-41
THIS WEEK: Bye

The Sooners survived a scare in Waco to stay on top another week. They have a bye week this week as they prepare to welcome Iowa State next week.

2. TCU [1-0, 4-0]

POINTS: 19 [1]
PREVIOUS RANKING: 3 [🔺1]
LAST WEEK: Beat OSU, 44-31
THIS WEEK: Bye

We have a new number two! The Horned Frogs continue to climb up the poll. Oklahoma better watch their back. TCU has a bye this week before facing another test in West Virginia.

3. OKLAHOMA STATE [0-1, 3-1]

POINTS: 32
PREVIOUS RANKING: 3 [🔻-2]
LAST WEEK: Lost to TCU, 44-31
THIS WEEK: at Texas Tech

The Cowboy came out sloppy against TCU and it cost them. They will have to focus this week as they are on the road against a surging Texas Tech team.

T-4. WEST VIRGINIA [1-0, 3-1]

POINTS: 48
PREVIOUS RANKING: 4
LAST WEEK: Beat KU, 56-34
THIS WEEK: Bye

Like the Sooners, WVU received a smalls care in week four, but they were able to put Kansas away late. The Mountaineers hold onto their four spot, but just barely as they ended up in a tie with Texas Tech in the voting. They have a bye this week before they travel to Fort Worth to face TCU.

T-4. TEXAS TECH [3-0]

POINTS: 48
PREVIOUS RANKING: 4 [🔺2]
LAST WEEK: Beat Houston, 27-24
THIS WEEK: vs Oklahoma State

The Red Raiders are in a position almost nobody saw them in at this point of the season; undefeated. With solid wins against Arizona State two weeks ago and Houston last week, Texas Tech is flying up the rankings. Just two weeks ago they were eighth in the poll. The competition picks up this week though, as they welcome Oklahoma State to Lubbock.

6. KANSAS STATE [2-1]

POINTS: 60
PREVIOUS RANKING: 5 [🔻-1]
LAST WEEK: Bye
NEXT WEEK: vs Baylor

The Wildcats slipped in the poll for another week; a week in which they didn’t play due to a bye. They will have a chance to turn the tide as we will see how they bounce back from the Vanderbilt loss as they welcome Baylor to Manhattan.

7. TEXAS [1-2]

POINTS: 70
PREVIOUS RANKING: 7
LAST WEEK: Bye
THIS WEEK: at Iowa State

The Longhorns are also coming off a bye, and like K-State have slipped a spot in the poll. Apparently, their impressive defensive performance against USC is already fading in our memory. They’ll have a chance to remind us what their ceiling is as they travel to Ames for a night game against Iowa State. What could go wrong in Ames on a Thursday?

8. IOWA STATE [2-1]

POINTS: 72
PREVIOUS RANKING: 8
LAST WEEK: Bye
THIS WEEK: vs Texas

The Cyclones were barely edged out by Texas in the rankings, but the offensive trio of Jacob Park, David Montgomery, and Allen Lazard welcome the Horns to Ames this week. You can bet who ever wins this one will likely jump up in the poll next week.

9. BAYLOR [0-1, 0-4]

POINTS: 93
PREVIOUS RANKING: 10 [🔺1]
LAST WEEK: Lost to OU, 49-41
THIS WEEK: at K-State

Baylor left everything out on the field against the Sooner last Saturday, and even though they didn’t get the win, they were rewarded for their effort in the poll. They are back out of the basement, but they’ll have to pick up a win somewhere if they want to stay out. That probably won’t come this week with K-State up next.

10. KANSAS [0-1, 1-3]

POINTS: 97
PREVIOUS RANKING: 9 [🔻-1]
LAST WEEK: Lost to WVU, 56-34
THIS WEEK: Bye

Poor Kansas. While Baylor is getting credit for keeping their game against Oklahoma close, the Jayhawks don’t get the same benefit for keeping within a score of West Virginia until midway through the fourth quarter. They have a week of rest before they welcome Texas Tech to Lawrence.
