Big 12 Holds Steady In Week 9 Coaches Poll

However, if the ball had bounced differently it easily could have been a trainwreck for the league.

After a crazy week seven, the world of college football settled down this weekend. No ranked teams lost to unranked teams. In fact, no teams even dropped out of the rankings in this week’s USA Today Amway Coaches Poll. The only ranked teams to lose were blue bloods Southern California and Michigan, who were both blown out on the road by Notre Dame and Penn State, respectively. However, they managed to stay in the rankings this week. Southern California had the steepest fall this week, dropping from number 10 to 21. Michigan was not far behind falling 10 spots from number 15 to 25.

It ended up being a quiet weekend for the Big 12, but it was extremely close to being an absolute disaster for the conference from a playoff perspective. Oklahoma State was definitely fortunate to escape Austin with a win. Oklahoma, who looked like the team with a Red River Showdown hangover, needed to come back from a 21-7 deficit to defeat Kansas State with a last second touchdown. West Virginia nearly blew a fourth quarter 25-point lead to winless Baylor. Baylor was a two-point conversion away from miraculously tying the game, but the Mountaineers sacked the Baylor true freshmen quarterback to seal the victory. The only ranked Big 12 team to look the part was number 4 TCU who held Kansas to 21 total yards of offense in a dominating 43-0 win.

Meanwhile, Notre Dame climbed all the way to number 10. The Fighting Irish have firmly inserted themselves into the College Football Playoff discussions. Their only loss is a one-point defeat at home to undefeated Georgia, and they now have two blowout victories over decent teams in Michigan State and Southern California. A Notre Dame squad in playoff contention is not good news for the Big 12, or any Power 5 conference for that matter. We all know every year somebody has to be left out of the playoff. When Notre Dame is in the hunt, two will be left out making it that much harder for the Big 12 to break through.
