Welcome back to the rankings, Cyclones! Iowa State is ranked in this week’s Associated Press Top 25 Poll for the first time since September 25, 2005. The Cyclones have taken down Oklahoma in Norman, crushed Kansas 45-0 and soundly defeated Texas Tech in Lubbock in consecutive weeks. It has been a terrific month of October for the Cyclones; however, in typical Big 12 fashion it only gets more difficult for Iowa State in week 9. They welcome #4 TCU into Jack Trice Stadium for perhaps the program’s most important game since joining the Big 12.

Meanwhile, it was a fairly quiet weekend around the country as there were no upsets among ranked teams. However, the Big 12 nearly had a terrible weekend as Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and West Virginia all squeaked out victories on the road against unranked opponents. Voters took notice as they dropped the Bedlam schools a spot in favor of Notre Dame after their dismantling of Southern California. Notre Dame is now in the top 10, and Oklahoma State is once again on the outside looking in.

Still, the Big 12 is looking great in the polls. The addition of Iowa State means that the Big 12 now has five teams ranked in the Top 25 compared to four teams for each of the other Power 5 conferences. The difference of course is that the other Power 5 conferences have two or four more teams than the Big 12. The Big 12 having 50 percent of its teams ranked is easily the best mark with the Pac-12 coming in second with 33 percent.

However, this likely will not last throughout the remainder of the season because, unlike the other conferences, Big 12 teams cannot avoid anybody. The gauntlet has kicked into full gear, and the top teams in the league are all entering their toughest stretches of the season. Time will tell if the top teams knock the mid-tier teams out of the rankings or if the Big 12 cannibalizes itself out of the playoff.
