Texas could find themselves with another starting quarterback out this Saturday because of injury.
In his Monday press conference, head coach Tom Herman announced that true freshman quarterback Sam Ehlinger is going through concussion protocol and is listed as day-to-day.
The head injury to Ehlinger would appear to be a major setback to a Longhorns offense that struggled against Oklahoma State in last Saturday’s 13-10 loss to the Cowboys. Herman stated that Ehlinger began to show concussion symptoms after the game and the quarterback was held out of Sunday practice.
Ehlinger had earned the starting spot after filling in for an injured Shane Buechele and cemented the role when Texas defeated Kansas State in overtime earlier this season.Ehlinger is known for his ability to run the ball, and despite the offense’s overall struggles, Ehlinger’s talents on the ground often provided the spark that kept the chains moving for Texas.
If Ehlinger is unable to play on Saturday against Baylor, sophomore Shane Buechele, who started the opening game against Maryland, would be the next player up.
Compounding matters on offense, Herman also announced on Monday that sophomore starting center Zach Shackelford also suffered a head injury and is being held out of practice. Shackelford injury is another blow for the offensive line that is already down starting tackles Connor Williams and Elijah Rodriguez for the season.
It is not yet know if the two will be able to go for Saturday’s matchup against Baylor.
