True freshman Sam Ehlinger has not been practicing all week, as he has been going through the concussion protocol. It is unclear at what point in the game against Oklahoma State that Ehlinger received his concussion, though early in overtime Ehlinger was slow to get up after a hit near the sideline.
Ehlinger earned the starting role over Buechele after Buechele was sidelined with an injury earlier in the year. Now the roles are reversed and its Buechele stepping back in for the injured Ehlinger.
While Buechele is more than capable of leading this offense it does make the Longhorns razor-thin at the quarterback position. If Buechele were to get injured at any point in the game the Longhorns would likely have to turn to wide receiver Jerrod Heard. Heard was a high school quarterback, but has played almost exclusively at wide receiver since arriving in Austin.
This is certainly not the news that Longhorn fans had been hoping for. Despite losing their last two games, Ehlinger has shown tons of potential. He is the superior runner to Buechele, and the team has seemed to rally around the freshman.
The Longhorns kickoff against the Baylor Bears on Saturday at 11:00AM in Waco, TX. The game will be televised on ESPNU.
