Big 12 Championship Game: Making Our Picks

The return of the Big 12 Championship game is finally here! As predicted before the season, the Sooners made it to the game and they are a touchdown favorite over TCU, a team only a few saw being here back in August.

Oklahoma got the better of the Horned Frogs in three weeks ago. Can TCU make the needed adjustments to win round two, or are the Sooners destined for the College Football Playoff? It’s time to make our picks!

CHRIS – The Frogs have the advantage of knowing what adjustments they need to make. Considering TCU’s coach is Gary Patterson, that should be terrifying for Lincoln Riley and Co. Further more, TCU is a very good team playing with absolutely no pressure. Even if they win, a trip to the playoff is far from guaranteed. Oklahoma was in a similar situation at the beginning of the season against Ohio State, where few gave them a chance, and we know how that played out. Tell a good team they don’t have a chance, and you’ll eat those words more often than not.

DANIEL – In the first meeting, the Sooner’s offense could not be stopped. Even with the benefit of planning for it again, it is an offense built to take advantage of whatever a defense gives when it tries to stop a certain aspect of it. Riley is a phenomenal play caller. The second half of the first meeting doesn’t bother me because Oklahoma was looking to run the clock off, not run up the score. Plus, OU’s defense did a good job shutting down’s TCU’s offense. Closer than first meeting, but Oklahoma still wins.

JOSH – I have thought all season that TCUs not a team built to play from behind, especially if they are playing a team with an offense that’s clicking. That being said, I think the rematch will see TCU jumping out to a lead and Oklahoma having fewer big plays downfield. It’ll be close, but the Horned Frogs will make this one ugly and come out on top.

MYERS – I am really tempted to pick TCU because it’s hard to fathom Gary Patterson losing to a team twice in the same year. I expect this to be a low scoring game in the first half. Then, Rodney Anderson and Baker Mayfield will explode late in the third quarter as the Sooners win by a couple touchdowns to book their trip to Pasadena.

ROBERT – Gary Patterson is a top notch coach and his Horned Frogs are a fine team. I️ fully expect TCU to make this game closer than the appetizer. The Sooners, however, simply have too much offense for the Frogs to match. Look for Baker Mayfield to have a great day and to come out looking like the Heisman Trophy winner.

JAY – In traditional Big 12 fashion, the team with the better offense will win the game. Patterson will be ready, but Riley is an excellent counter-puncher. The unsung part of the OU offense is its offensive line. They are good and they can control this game for a second time. Special teams and turnovers can keep it close, but I expect OU to sail in to the playoffs.

TAYLOR – I expect this game to be much closer than the first time these teams met. Patterson is too good of a coach to let a blowout happen again. Oklahoma’s offense is just too much though. They can beat you in so many ways. OU wins a tight one, and secures their spot in the playoff.

TWITTER – And to wrap it up, the Twitter votes leaned heavily in the Sooner’s direction.
