Depth Of Big 12 Talent Highlighted On Another All-America Team

Despite all the talk of the supposed weakness of the Big 12 heading into 2017, the conferenced continues to receive accolades in the postseason and out pace the rest of the Power Five.

Seven players from the Big 12 managed to make the first team for the Football Writers Association of America All-America Team. The conference had more players on the first team than any other league in Division I football.

The Big 12 also tied two other Power Five conferences – the Big Ten and the ACC – for the most players to be listed on either the first or second team units.

1st TEAM
Off | Def| ST
2nd TEAM
Off | Def| ST
Total
ACC 0 | 3 | 0 3 | 3 | 0 9
BIG 12 4 | 2 | 1 0 | 1 | 1 9
BIG TEN 1 | 2 | 1 3 | 2 | 0 9
PAC-12 2 | 0 | 1 0 | 3 | 1 7
SEC 0 | 2 | 0 4 | 0 | 1 2

The Big 12 was well represented offensively, with familiar names like Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield and Oklahoma State’s James Washington making it onto the first team, but Texas defensive back DeShon Elliot and Iowa State linebacker Joel Lanning also managed to make it onto the first team defense.

Oklahoma had more first team selections than any other team with three on offense and also had a player make the second team.

It’s no secret that the Big 12 has been one of the deepest conferences in FBS this year and that was reflected in the five teams that managed to make it on either the first or second team list (Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Iowa State, Texas and Kansas State).
