Four Texas Tech Players Arrested Sunday Morning

As the Red Raiders prepare to face Villanova in the Elite 8 this afternoon, it’s the football team that is making headlines Sunday morning. Unfortunately, it’s not good news.

As first reported by Jarret Johnson of Inside the Red Raiders, four Texas Tech football players were arrested overnight.

The details of what lead to the arrests aren’t fully known at this time, and it’s unclear if any of the arrests stem from the same incident, or if they are all unrelated.

Here’s what we know right now. At 4:15 AM, quarterback Jett Duffey was the first booked into Lubbock County jail on complaints of criminal mischief. A half hour later, at 4:48 AM, linebacker Christian Taylor was booked for under the same complaint. Then, at 5:08 AM, receiver Quan Shorts was booked on disorderly conduct charges. Then, at 8:07 AM, defensive back Desmon Smith joined his teammates on charges of disorderly conduct.

Shorts, a redshirt junior this season, has seen limited action over the last two seasons. In 2017, he recorded 9 receptions for 109 yards and two touchdowns. Taylor, also a redshirt junior, played in all 12 games last year, recording five tackles, and will likely be a major contributor in 2018. Smith, a junior, has made an impact since stepping foot on campus. He played in seven games as a true freshman, and started at cornerback last season. He recorded 46 tackles and an interception.

While none of the four charges are overly serious by themselves, for Duffey, will this be the final straw? As a redshirt freshman last season, he was held out of spring and summer camps after Texas Tech’s Title IX panel found that he had nonconsenual sex with a woman in 2016. He played in one game last season and is expected to challenge for the starting QB role this season.

Texas Tech has yet to release a statement, but it is likely that one will come soon as the program is in the middle of spring camp and held their first scrimmage of the season over the weekend.
