In further proof that this will be the year of the running back in the Big 12, six of the conference’s 10 starting backs have been named to the Doak Walker Award watch list. The Doak Walker Award, of course, going to the nation’s top running back.
The Big 12’s six candidates
Darius Anderson – TCU
Rodney Anderson – OU
Alex Barnes – KSU
Justice Hill – OSU
David Montgomery – ISU
Da’Leon Ward – TTU
Rodney Anderson, Hill and Montgomery were named to the media’s preseason All-Big 12 team, and Hill finished as a semi-finalist for the Doak Walker last year behind his 1,467-yard and 15-touchdown rushing performance.
Rodney and Montgomery also put up 1,000-yard performances last season with 1,161 yards and 1,146 yards, respectfully. Anderson’s performance is especially notable considering he didn’t receive meaningful carries until week five of last season, and was relied upon more and more as the season went on.
Darius (768 yards) and Barnes (819 yards) also had respectable season last year, and will be relied upon again this season. Ward used his redshirt year last season as he focused on academics, but was impressive in the spring and is expected to be a big part of the Red Raider’s offense in 2018.
Stanford’s Bryce Love took home the award last season, and returns to the field again this year as an early favorite to repeat. You can check out the full award watch list here.
