Six Big 12 Players Named To Wuerffel Trophy Watch List

Six Big 12 players have been named to the Wuerffel Trophy watch list for their community service efforts.

If a football player messes up and gets caught doing something off the field, like Isi Holani being arrested on suspicion of DUI, it’s sure to be covered by numerous outlets. There will be no shortage of coverage on it. However, for the players doing everything right off the field, it can seem like their good deeds go unnoticed and unappreciated.

Enter the Wuerffel Tropy. Simply put, the Wuerffel trophy focuses more on community service and athletics. It doesn’t care as much about a player’s arm strength or running ability as it does a player’s character. Fifty percent of the criteria to win the award is based on community service, while athletics and academics account for 25 percent, each.

 “It will inspire other people to be community minded, to live for others, to sacrifice their own interests for the benefit of the community and other people.” – Danny Wuerffel, for whom the trophy was named.

The Wuerffel Tropy released its watch list for the 2018 season, and the Big 12 is well represented.

Big 12 Players On The Wuerffel Trophy Watch List

Joe Dineen Jr – Kansas
Dalton Risner – K-State
Caleb Kelly – Oklahoma
Ben Banogu – TCU
Collin Johnson – Texas
Will Grier – West Virginia

For Dineen and Risner, this is their second time being nominated to the watch list as they both appeared on it last season.
