With rumors swirling that coach Matt Campbell would be the front-runner for the Ohio State job, should it come available, you know it was going to come up during media availability as the team kicks off fall camp. Coach Campbell knew it as well and did his best to quell Cyclone Nation’s fears.

Anticipating that it would come up, he nipped it in the bud, and let it be known that he wasn’t here for it. He also reaffirmed his commitment to the Cyclone football program and that he’s the type of guy that wants to build something, not be someone.
“Over the last few days, I’ve gotten some text messages and phone calls about addressing situations at other institution’s football program.” Campbell said before he took questions. “From my end, I’m never going to talk about what’s going on at other schools or other universities.
“My sole purpose in my job is to focus on number one, our football players, number two, our coaching staff, number three, our fan base, and number four, the future of our football program. I think a lot of you guys know me. I think a lot of you guys know what I stand for. I’ve always said this, you’re either somebody in this profession that’s trying to be somebody or trying to do something. I think that over the last two and a half years I’ve proven that my whole sole mission is to be here, and to do something.
“So with that said, I have the most upmost respect for [the media] and the job you have to do, but I’ll only answer questions that pertain to our football program, Iowa State football, and our future.”
Does this mean he definitely wouldn’t leave if the Buckeye’s offered? Of course not. It’s still too early for Cyclone Nation to put the booze away.
Campbell said all the right things; the things Iowa State fans want to hear. However, when you boil it down, all he really said is that he didn’t want to talk about it.
Now, I tend to believe that when coach Campbell says he wants to build something, he is telling the truth. It’s not just lip service for him. However, it’s an easy thing to say when there is no offer on the table.
