The Associated Press dropped the week five Top 25 poll, and there has been a massive shake up.
There wasn’t a lot of movement at the top. The Sooners fell one spot to 6th, and West Virginia remains at 12th. After that though, things get crazy.
The next Big 12 team ranked is Texas at 18. The Longhorns have been impressive the last two weeks, but still, that’s a big jump. Texas, if you extend out the poll with those receiving votes, was 33rd last week. Math says that’s a jump of 15 spots. I thought Texas would crack the top 25, but they are well into the poll, and that’s great for the Big 12.
The last Big 12 team named is Texas Tech at 25th. TCU and Oklahoma State have dropped from the rankings, though they both received votes.
It’s tough to stay ranked with back-to-back losses, so TCU’s fall isn’t surprising. The Cowboy’s loss was pretty bad, but I didn’t expect them to fall completely out of the poll. Teams have off games, and that one snowballed on them, but at the end of the day it’s one loss to what the pollsters clearly think is a capable team. If you carry it out, they finished 30th. That’s another swing of 15 spots.
Texas Tech has had a couple of great weeks. I just didn’t expect to see them crack the poll since the Red Raiders didn’t receive any votes last week. From the teams that received votes last week, they jumped 18 spots.
