Upset wins have thrown the power rankings into complete chaos in week five.
The top of the rankings is the calm before the storm as Oklahoma and West Virginia hold serve as it looks like the Sooners and Mountaineers are destined to meet in the Big 12 Championship game.
The next tier down, the teams that have the potential to upset the favorites, has been flipped on its head this week as the Longhorns and Red Raiders look like completely different teams than they did to start the year.
Truth be told, by the time it’s all said and done, I’m not sold that the Longhorns and Red Raiders are better than the Horned Frogs and Cowboys. However, you cannot deny last week’s results. So, for now, Texas and Texas Tech get the nod.
There’s also no denying that as the season has gone on, Tom Herman and Kliff Kingsbury have started to answer some of the questions surrounding their squads, while the concerns are starting to pile up for Gary Patterson’s and Mike Gundy’s teams. If they cannot find some answers soon, particularly the Pokes, well then, Iowa State is waiting to move up the rankings.
The bottom of the rankings remains the same, but Baylor has a solid lead over Kansas and Kansas State after taking it to the Jayhawks this last week.
Despite the emphatic loss to the eighth team in the rankings, Kansas stays out of the basement simply because they’ve shown a higher ceiling.
