After the Jayhawk’s loss to Iowa State on Saturday, reports surfaced that head coach David Beaty had been fired. On Sunday, Kansas athletic director Jeff Long made it official, but with one caveat. Beaty, while officially fired, will still coach the Jayhawk’s remaining three games.
“After a thorough evaluation of the program, I believe that new leadership is necessary for our football team to move forward and compete at the highest level of the Big 12 Conference,” Long said. “I know that Coach Beaty cares deeply about his players, and I respect that. The student-athletes on this team have continued to play hard — and I am confident they will do that for the rest of the season.”
Long reportedly told Beaty he was out on Sunday, and then met with the team. Long also confirmed that the coaching search will begin immediately. We have some thoughts on where they should start, but that’s for another article.
We also know a bit more about Beaty’s buyout. After signing a contract extension just two years ago, Kansas will pay Beaty $3 million to be paid out in six payments.
We wish Beaty luck in his future endeavors.
