West Virginia Will Play Syracuse In The Camping World Bowl

The Mountaineers have a chance to take back some bragging rights in the Camping World Bowl.

It’s not the matchup West Virginia fans wanted, but it’s the one they are going to get. The Mountaineers are headed to Orlando to take on Syracuse in the Camping World Bowl.

The Blue and Gold faithful were hoping for a bid to the Alamo Bowl, but there’s still plenty of reason to be excited about this matchup. Namely, the chance to take back bragging rights against a former rival.

The Ben Schwartzwalder Trophy resides in Syracuse, NY, as the Orange won the last three meetings between the two. The former Big East members have squared off 60 times in total, and it has been a pretty even rivalry. Although Syracuse has the slight edge with 33 wins.

The annual rivalry game ended when West Virginia joined the Big 12 and Syracuse joined the ACC, but they last faced each other in the 2012 Pinestripe Bowl. Syracuse won that game 38-14.

This time around, the Orange enter the game 9-3, with losses to #3 Clemson, Pitt and #3 Notre Dame, and are ranked 20th in the nation. The Mountaineers, four spots ahead in the rankings, are 8-3 thanks to a cancelled game against NC State in week three.

It will be West Virginia’s fifth appearance in the Camping World Bowl.

For fans wanting to go to the game, West Virginia will be on the West side of the Stadium.
