It’s about that time. Right now, all ten Big 12 teams are deep in the heart of spring ball, with returning players working to earn playing time and early enrollees.
Teams will be kicking off their Spring Games over the next few weeks. Let’s do a quick rundown of what, and when, to expect.
Saturday, April 13 at 12:00 pm CT | Waco, Texas
The Bears will wrap up their spring with the annual Green and Gold scrimmage game in Waco. Fans will get their first chance to see how Coach Rhule will replace the right side of the offensive line and how the Big 12’s most underrated quarterback Charlie Brewer looks heading into year three.
The game isn’t the only thing going on for Green and Gold Weekend, with a run and other teams, including baseball and softball, in action. It’s basically like a spring Homecoming weekend for the Baylor faithful.
Saturday, April 13 at 6:00 pm CT | Lawrence, Kansas
New head coach Les Miles will debut his version of the Jayhawks to the public for the first time at what’s being called “Late Night Under the Lights.”
Kansas is going all out for their spring game, including Gameday on the Hill (complete with a live band and DJ), an egg hunt for the kids, a BMX Bike performance, and more. Hell, they even put out a hype video for the event.
While there’s no way we’re going to know if Les can improve on Kansas’ record in year one, fans will at least get a vibe for the personality of the team.
Saturday, April 13 at 1:00 pm CT | Manhattan, Kansas
For his first season at Kansas State, new head coach Chris Kleiman is forgoing the traditional “game” for an interactive scrimmage. Deemed the “Spring Showcase,” fans will get three hours to watch drills, hear from Coach Klieman and his coaching staff, and participate in other events around the stadium.
“I haven’t done a spring game in years,” Klieman said, referring to his time at North Dakota State. “I think it has kind of gone away a little bit in college football. Some schools that have huge numbers still do it, but if you look at our injury report we don’t even have enough corners to even practice right now.”
Tickets to the showcase are $5.
Saturday, April 13 at 3:00 pm CT | Norman, OK
The Sooners will, for the second year in a row, throw one of the biggest Spring parties in college football for their Spring Game, a.k.a “Energy Day.”
This year, the in-stadium concert will feature country artist Lee Brice (I don’t know either) and start at 1:30. There will also be a Spring Sale, fan fest, a punt catching contest, and a whole lot more.
All that aside, OU fans will get their first look at new quarterback Jalen Hurd and defensive coordinator Alex Grinch’s new Sooner defense.
I would also check out the Sooner hype video.
Saturday, April 20 at 1 pm CT | Stillwater, Oklahoma
Cowboy fans will get their first look at new offensive coordinator Sean Gleeson’s offense, and likely their new starting quarterback, be that Spencer Sanders or Dru Brown.
The weekend will start with the annual Remember the Ten Run around Stillwater, and conclude with a baseball match-up against Texas.
All that said, still no word on how Edmond or South Tulsa will be involved.
Saturday, April 6 at ??? | Fort Worth, Texas
The question at this point is IF TCU holds a spring game. Other than the date, there is no information about the game or weekend, including a start time.
There is plenty of intrigue after a 7-6 season including who’s going to be the starting quarterback and can the offensive line issues get fixed.
Let’s hope fans get some answers this weekend.
Saturday, April 13 at 6:30 CT | Austin, Texas
Yeah, there’s a game. But more importantly, there’s Ludacris.
The three-time Grammy Award winner will perform after the game as part of “Made in Austin Weekend.” Austin urban hip-hop artist Noah North will join him on stage.
It’s a big show for a big preview. There is going to be a lot of hype heading into year three for Tom Herman. Whether or not
Saturday, March 30 at 1 pm CT | Lubbock, Texas
Friday, April 5 at 7 pm CT | Midland, Texas
Saturday, April 13 at 2 pm CT | Frisco, Texas
Tech kicked off the Big 12 Spring Games on Saturday in Lubbock. But if you missed that game, never fear. Fans have two more chances to get a look at new head coach Matt Wells’ team.
Tech is also holding spring games in Midland on Friday, April 5th and in Frisco on Saturday, April 13th.
It should be interesting to see what Wells has cooked up and the level of anticipation he builds for year one.
*Iowa State and West Virginia will not hold Spring games this year.
