It’s time for picks! Here’s hoping for a rebound from last week.

After a couple of great weeks to open the season, the bottom fell out last week. That is okay though, because we just learned more about these teams. Besides, most of our losses came in the best way possible.

Kansas showed that they have live with an emphatic beat down of Boston College, Kansas State continues to look impressive, and West Virginia responded in a big way as well. Those were three losses in the picks, but great wins for the Big 12, so I’m not even mad.

When the dust settled Saturday night, I was 3-6. Not great, but still doing okay on the season.

Big 12 Record: 11-7-2
Non-Big 12 Record: 3-0

If you haven’t been following along on the Podcast, Phillip and I have been making one pick a week on a non-Big 12 game. I’ve decided to start including those picks here.

UL Monroe at Iowa State

  • Line: ISU -17.5
  • Over/Under: 52.5

We’ve only seen a couple of outings by the Cyclones so far, but neither one looked great. Without showing us that they can put a clean game together, I’m not confident in their ability to bounce back after last week’s heart-breaking loss. I think the Cyclones get the win, but it won’t be pretty with the early kickoff.
The Pick: ULM +17.5

SMU at #25 TCU

  • Line: TCU -9.5
  • Over/Under: 55.5

I didn’t believe in TCU last week on the road, and it cost me. The Horned Frogs got a big win as Max Duggan seems to have taken over the quarterbacking duties. At the risk of looking like a dummy, I’m probably going to make the same mistake. Purdue didn’t prepare for Duggan. SMU will. SMU has a pretty decent offense as well. I like things to stay close in the rivalry matchup.
The Pick: SMU +9.5

West Virginia at Kansas

  • Line: WVU -4.5
  • Over/Under: 49.5

Both of these teams responded in big ways last week. The Jayhawks exorcised a decades worth of demons at Boston College’s expense, and West Virginia got the win as an underdog at NC State. This is going to come down to QB play, and KU might have the advantage here. Carter Stanley thrived with the RPO last week while Austin Kendall’s play has been up and down at best. Give me the home team.
The Pick: KU +4.5

Baylor at Rice

  • Line: BAY -26.5
  • Over/Under: 57.5

I like what I have seen out of Baylor this season. I also liked what I saw out of the Longhorns last week as they took Rice to the wood shed. Two weeks, two Big 12 beat downs for Rice.
The Pick: BAY -26.5

Oklahoma State at Texas

  • Line: TEX -7.0
  • Over/Under: 72.5

Why do I have to make a pick on this game? Oklahoma State has won 5-straight in Austin, and I don’t think that can continue. Texas is hungry to get this win, and if they were healthy, I would pick the Longhorns. But Texas isn’t healthy. The key losses in the secondary will be the difference here in what is shaping up to be a shootout. I’m going to take OSU and expect to lose my money.
The Pick: OSU +7.0

Bonus Non Big 12: UL-Lafayette at Ohio

  • Line: OHIO -3.5
  • Over/Under: 67.5

As I said in the intro, I’m going to start including my non-Big 12 pick made on the Ten12 Podcast. This week, I’m looking at the Group of 5. There is value here, like in this game. UL-Lafayette is 3-0 against the spread. The money continues to under-estimate the Ragin’ Cajuns, and it has again this week. Ohio is 1-2 against the spread, and they are coming off a tough loss last week. The Cajuns are the better team and get the road win.
The Pick: ULL +3.5
