The latest AP Poll is out and it is not kind to the Big 12 after a weekend of chaos in the conference. Every ranked Big 12 team that played this weekend lost as all four games resulted in a upset. I’m not sure that has ever happened before. For the Bears, sitting out home this week with a bye might have been their best performance of the season.

The AP Poll also has a new number one this week. The Tigers of LSU defeated the Tigers of Auburn in their third top-10 win of the season. And in doing so, they leaped frog’d the Crimson Tide, who happens to be their next opponent after a bye week this upcoming weekend. Ohio State and Clemson held strong this week to round out the coveted top four spots.

As the dust clears in the Big 12, Oklahoma (10th) and Baylor (12th) remain ranked while Texas and Iowa State have fallen out of the rankings. However, the Wildcats (22nd) jump back into the poll after the big win over the Sooners.

I’m a bit surprised to see Texas fall completely out of the top 25, but this might be the conference’s best showing in the poll this season. Yes, you read that right. Here’s why; the Big 12 has had just three teams ranked for the majority of the season. And while having four teams in is better than three, Texas is the first team out this week. The bonus is, Oklahoma State and Iowa State also received a vote this week. The Cowboys could also get back in with a win over TCU this week. Or at least get close to getting back in.

The take-a-way is that it’s clear that the majority of the nation views Texas as a top-25 team, and with the Cowboys and Cyclones getting votes, that makes 60 percent of the conference at least in the conversation. That’s going to go a long way into trying to get a one-loss champion into the College Football Playoff. Now, if we can just keep the conference from consuming itself more than it already has…
