After the first two games of the season there were still questions about just how good West Virginia is. After this past Saturday’s annihilation of Maryland at home though, the Mountaineers definitely have the Big 12’s attention.

Think about this, we knew that they were going to have a good defense heading into this season, and through their first three games they have the stats to prove it. They currently have the top ranked scoring defense in the FBS. On the other side of the ball, their offense ranks 14th in scoring with an average of 44.3 points per game.  West Virginia also finds themselves at the top of the rankings in turnover margin as well. They are averaging three more takeaways than giveaways per game. With those kinds of stats it’s easy to think that the Mountaineers might be the best team in the Big 12.

The next four games will go a long way towards proving whether that thought is true or false though. This weekend West Virginia travels to Norman to face an Oklahoma team who’s coming off a bye. The following weekend they welcome 20th-ranked Oklahoma State to Morgantown with the Cowboys looking to break a two game losing streak against the Mountaineers.  After that West Virginia heads to Waco to face Baylor for a hotly anticipated rematch.  You’ll probably remember last year WVU cost Baylor a spot in the College Football Playoff. They get somewhat of a breather the following week with a bye, but the gauntlet run isn’t over. They head to Fort Worth the following week where they’ll face TCU.

The Mountaineers have stormed out the gate, and look good headed into Big 12. The question is though, are they the best team in the Big 12?
