Week 3 Betting Lines For The Big 12 & Making Picks

The first two weeks went pretty well, so hopefully we can keep that going with week 3 picks!

The unbeaten streak couldn’t last forever. The Jayhawks disappointed us all in an uninspiring effort, but the rest of the week went pretty good. I was also really luck to that I post the Texas pick when the line was at +7, resulting in a push. Most probably wouldn’t consider a push as lucky, but considering that I was losing the pick until that last drive, I’ll take it.

Record: 8-1-2

Over all, I am pretty happy with the season so far, and if you have been following along with picks made on the Ten12 Podcast, my two non-Big 12 picks have also won. So 10-1-2 ain’t bad.

This week looks to be a bit harder. One, we are done with the FCS schools, which means the lines will be a litter tighter. It also means that there will be more games to pick on this week.

Kansas at Boston College

  • Line: BC -20.5
  • Over/Under: 51

What happened Kansas? After a promising week one, the Jayhawks completely fell apart against…checks notes, Coastal Carolina. That is not a good sign for the season. I chose to believe in Kansas last week, and they gave me my only loss on the season. I’m not going to make that mistake again. Kansas is 0-2 against the spread. Take Boston College and lay the nearly three scores. I liked the line at 21, but it has dropped half a point, so I really like it now.
Pick: BC -20.5

Kansas State at Mississippi State

  • Line: MSST -7
  • Over/Under: 52

Kansas State is 2-0 against the spread and I have to admit, they have looked a lot better than I thought they would. However, that ends in Mississippi. The Bulldogs exposed the Wildcats last year. Kansas State got pushed around in the trenches last year, and I’m not sure much changes this year.
Pick: MSST -7

NC State at West Virginia

  • Line: NCST -6.5
  • Over/Under: 45.5

What can I say about West Virginia…? Not anything good. This team is lost, and quarterback Austin Kendall looked very average. I’m beginning to think the competition between him and Kyler Murray in Norman wasn’t actually all that close. I don’t think the Mountaineers have much for NC State.
Pick: NCST -6.5

Oklahoma State at Tulsa

  • Line: OSU -14
  • Over/Under: 64

The Cowboys offense sputtered out of the gate last week, and Tulsa should be a bit more formidable than McNeese State, but in the result will be the same. A blowout win for the Pokes. Barring a weird repeat of 2011 where these two teams ended up playing in the middle of the night, Oklahoma State should win comfortably. They are simply the better team. I like the Pokes by three scores, so I really like them at two.
Pick: OSU-14

Iowa at Iowa State

  • Line: IOWA -2.5
  • Over/Under: 43.5

The Cyclones definitely didn’t look great out of the gate, but I’m hoping an early bye week last week has done two things. One, I hope it’s caused the money to sleep on the Cyclone based off their week one performance. Two, I really hope that week one performance was just a throw-a-way game and not an indication of who this team is. Iowa State is due to end the Hawkeye’s streak for the Cy-Hawk Trophy. Here’s hoping it’s this year.
Pick: ISU +2.5

TCU at Purdue

  • Line: TCU -2
  • Over/Under: 52.5

Speaking of teams that didn’t look good in their opener, TCU is traveling to Purdue. It took the Horned Frogs a bit to get going against Arkansas-Pine Bluff, and I’m not sold that won’t happen again as long as Alex Delton is under center. If this game was in Fort Worth, I would ride with the Frogs, but it’s not. It’s in West Lafayette, IN, and I think the home team wins a close one.
Pick: PUR +2

Oklahoma at UCLA

  • Line: OKLA -23.5
  • Over/Under: 73

UCLA has not only failed to win a game, but they have failed to cover a spread this season. I don’t think that is going to change Lincoln Riley and the Sooner’s offense. The Bruins are just bad and Oklahoma might have this spread covered by half time as they show out for the California recruits.
Pick: OKLA -23.5

Texas vs Rice

  • Line: TEX -32
  • Over/Under: 56

The Longhorns are clearly the better team here, and on any other day, I’d like them to handle Rice by the 32-point spread. However, the Horns are coming off a deflating loss. Texas gets the win, but don’t be surprised if it’s a slow start. The injuries are racking up in Austin, and I’m going to take Rice here and every one of those 32 points.
Pick: RICE +32

Texas Tech at Arizona

  • Line: TTU -2
  • Over/Under: 77

I have liked what I have seen out of the Red Raiders so far. The offense hasn’t missed a beat under coordinator David Yost, and the defense looks promising. Arizona has some fire power, but Texas Tech will be too much. I like the Red Raiders to win this comfortably.
Pick TTU -2
