Big 12 Media Days: TCU Coach Patterson talks new Quarterbacks Coach Kenny Hill

This offseason, when TCU went through it’s coaching staff shuffle, Coach Gary Patterson found himself in need of a new quarterback coach.

Former offensive coordinator Sonny Cumbie, who was previously in charge of recruiting and developing the Horned Frog’s quarterbacks, was off across the state taking the same job at Texas Tech.

Luckily, Patterson didn’t have to look far.

Former TCU quarterback Kenny Hill had been serving as a graduate assistant and analyst for the team for the past three seasons.

“Kenny is a guy that’s had the ‘it’ factor as far as a personality and all of that. I think the biggest thing is his relationship with Max Duggan in particular. It became very clear he would be the right answer for us because of his relationship with Max (Duggan) and the other quarterbacks.”

Kenny Hill played quarterback for TCU in 2016 and 2017, helping lead the Horned Frogs to the Big 12 Championship game in 2017 and an 11-3 record. Hill’s prebuilt relationship with both the program and the current players on the roster made Hill the obvious choice to Coach Patterson.

“Kenny Hill… a guy that played in our system is big because you know it’s kind of like even if it’s offensive line or anything else, any time you have somebody that played the position, that understands the position, especially in our climate at TCU, and understands our process is going to make a guy better. Because he can say well I went through this, here’s how we do this, this is why we practice like this, this is why we do the drill like that.”

Hill also fits into Patterson’s new coaching staff formula, one similar to Nick Saban at Alabama; combining older experienced coaches like Jerry Kill, Tim Beck, and Tony Sanchez behind the scenes, with younger guys like Hill and defensive line coach Zarnell Fitch who are excellent recruiters.

“.. he has such a high end as far as personality and being able to recruit… the relationships when the kids came on campus as to how they related to him as a recruiter; that was the same reason I hired Zarnell Fitch when he was on campus. The kids just gravitated to him. I think if you ask guys that are in here they would talk to you about how those guys do a great job in recruiting.”

With the expectations for TCU this season and the need for quarterback Max Duggan to “take the next step,” Hill will have a great opportunity to make a name for himself quickly this season as a quarterback coach.
